When Rosanne Cash was a young girl, her father Johnny gave her a list of essential country songs. Next Tuesday, Oct. 6, Cash will release an album of her versions of some of the best songs on that list. Among them are tunes like Patsy Cline’s “She’s Got You” and standards like “Long Black Veil.” The disc also sees her collaborating with folks like Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy, and others. Like I mentioned above, it’s not available online or in stores until next week, but NPR is offering a free live stream of the whole album (plus a bonus track with Neko Case on backing vocals) this week from their Web site . Not only is this album an excellent collection of some of the best country songs of all time, but Cash’s performance is, as always, fantastic. Tune in for yourself and drop us a comment with your thoughts. image © Manhattan Records

After Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson was the most popular male country singer of the '90s. An heir to the new traditionalist movement of the '80s, Jackson's approach was rooted in classic honky tonk yet remained comfortably within the contemporary mainstream. Jackson's hallmark was consistency -- he wrote many of his own hits, and his way with a hook was part of the reason he never really hit a commercial dry spell, even into the new millennium.
